IN THE HUDDLE: Rafeek Frederick

Rafeek Frederick, PUNTA GORDA CHARLOTTE

The theme this summer for many has been all the new faces that have popped up. Last year, after not playing a full organized football game since his days in the Pop Warner league, Frederick emerged as one of the prospects on the rise for a program that went through plenty with the loss of one of its coaches and the wrath of Hurricane Charley.

During the summer and into the season, www.floridakids.us will bring you our IN THE HUDDLE segments with football players throughout the state of Florida.

These are similar to the evaluations we pass on to the hundreds of colleges who visit our website, call us on the phone and correspond via e-mail.

Here is another top football player to keep an eye on this season – and beyond.

One of the greatest things about my job, as a recruiting evaluator, is that I get to see a lot of players, meet coaches, parents and people who help me keep a watch for hidden gems throughout the state of Florida.

Two weeks ago, I received an e-mail from a college coach who I ran into at three different camps this summer. He was impressed at the way FloridaKids.us has a keen knack of spotting talent years in advance and sticking with them. He was also interested in the players we find during the course of the spring and summer.

As well as this state is known for the star-quality players who we sometimes find as freshmen, the thing that really peaks the interest for college coaches and recruiters is the way we find D1A talent that many have never watched before.

Over the past five years, I have gotten close to the coaches and parents at Charlotte High. From Dishon Platt and Justin Midgett to former quarterback and University of Florida standout baseball player Jeff Corsaletti, who is now with the Boston Red Sox.

I can still remember Corsaletti breaking all kinds of passing records for the Tarpons, and then he put the football down to concentrate on baseball. Turned out to be a smart move as was an important member of the College World Series finalists.

One of the best offensive coaching minds in this state is Larry Marsh. This is someone who develops offensive attacks and knows exactly what players will succeed at the next level.

On a recent trip to Tampa, I saw Coach Marsh, who has been right in the past on so many football players. He told me that Frederick will be one of those gifted young men who could break records.

While my attention was focused on returning standout Lance Francis, Marsh and several others informed me to keep an eye on Frederick, and they were right! I grabbed two game films and then watched him in the USF Sling & Shoot event, and I will tell you that this is someone who is more than a blip on the radar screen.

While Wayne Campbell threw the ball last year, and Frederick saw limited action, Travis Kreischer was a quarterback who seemed to work well with Frederick over the past seven months as well as at the camps.

When Frederick caught 6 balls for 97 yards and 3 TD in a game against North Fort Myers last season with Francis injured, it was the first time he had played a full game since his youth football days. That game, which saw the Tarpons shut highly regarded sophomore running back Noel Devine down, was a springboard for Frederick.

STRENGTHS:With his size and tremendous hands, it shouldn't take long before Frederick impacts the offense for the Tarpons. He is very athletic and has deceptive speed.

Watching him on film, you can't get the full impact of what kind of player he has the potential to be. In person, he simply lights it up. He runs solid pass patterns and is not afraid to go over the middle for a ball. He gets physical and will not back down against some solid cornerbacks.

WHAT HE NEEDS TO WORK ON: Getting used to playing a role will be hard when you have so much talent. This is someone who needs to start playing on strengths. His size helps him become lethal as a short-yardage receiver. It also aids down near the goal line where you have to go through and over him when trying to cover.

There is a need to add weight to that tall frame, but get him into college and that will not be an option!

OVERALL: While watching film got Frederick noticed from the beginning by a few recruiting analysts, his overall play and ability to pick things up has been the main difference as colleges will start seeing what everyone has talked about.

COLLEGES ON THE HORIZON: While schools such as South Florida, UAB, Southern Mississippi, UCF and several others have kept an eye on his progress, you will see that list grow during the season.
