IN THE HUDDLE: Tertavian Ingram

Tertavian Ingram

There are some quality football players who everyone has been working overtime promoting this summer, and then there is a player like Ingram who has been getting it done on a large stage for three years.

During the summer and into the season, www.floridakids.us will bring you our IN THE HUDDLE segments with football players throughout the state of Florida.

These are similar to the evaluations we pass on to the hundreds of colleges who visit our website, call us on the phone and correspond via e-mail.

Here is another top football player to keep an eye on this season – and beyond.

As I do each January, after the season has finished, I call just about every high school coach in the state to talk about some of the players to look for over the next few months.

My discussion with Tampa Jefferson head coach Mike Simmonds is always impressive. He always has so many talented athletes to choose from.

Two years ago, when I talked with Simmonds, he told me about some seniors to watch for as well as a few juniors. Then, as he though for a moment, he started to speak about a sophomore he had who had the potential to be one of the best he's ever coach.

The one thing about Coach Simmonds is he has played in the National Football League, so when he goes on and on about a football player, you have to believe that he is serious.

When we talked about Ingram, we both saw an athlete with plenty of potential. One who could some day be an elite receiver at the collegiate level.

The one thing that set Ingram apart from most of the talented receivers with his ability was his big game experience. The Dragons always advance deep into the playoffs, so he had a real advantage of competing against some of the top defensive backs in the state.

I have watched Ingram LIVE 4 times. I have watched him at a camp/combine setting twice and viewed his abilities via film in seven more games, so I have set myself up to evaluate his football talents in many directions.

STRENGTHS: As a pass catcher, his 39 catches for 800 yards a year ago illustrates his productivity to a team.

Here is someone who gets off the ball very well, is physical enough not to get locked down and runs short and intermediate routes extremely well.

He has shown tremendous leaping ability and has great concentration. I saw him drop two balls in over 40 attempts toward his direction. Both passes should have been caught, but he more than made up for it with his ability to make things happen in many other areas such as blocking where he really surprised me with his skill level.

WHAT HE NEEDS TO WORK ON: Is not a burner. No matter how many times I watched him, he wasn‘t going to take one the distance against a team with speed, but I can give you 50 receivers playing at the elite next level who cannot break away.

He also needs to start stretching the defense and using his physical advantage by taking his patterns over the middle more.

OVERALL: Here is a football player with plenty of ability and one who could fit in at an elite college because he has learned how to be a role player. His blocking skills and ability to catch the ball against some top-flight corners and safeties sets him apart. Like I said when I first saw him play two years ago - he will be a star!

COLLEGES ON THE HORIZON: While Duke is the only school to have offered, the list of programs still showing interest include Florida, Auburn, Florida State, Miami and LSU.
