Travius Thompson, LAUDERDALE LAKES BOYD ANDERSON

In the state of Florida, there are often athletes who make a solid impact throughout the spring and into the summer. But no star has risen quicker than this Lauderdale Lakes Boyd Anderson wide receiver who has emerged as one of the best in the state!

There was that camp that we talk about that was the first of the season. The one in Davie, Fl. that attracted some of the elite players from Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach County. The one that players and coaches are still talking about some three months later.

The Perfect Competition/FloridaKids.us Camp that had players such as Sam Young, Charles Deas, Brandon Heath, Kenrick Ellis, Preston Parker, Tyler Rice, Thaddeus Lewis, Javon Hill, Marcus Gilbert, Kevin Perez, John Ware, Anthony Henderson, Patrick Robinson, Sheldon Jacques, Xavier Harris, Cody Clinton, Sabbath Joseph and many, many more.

That camp, which was held on March 19-20 was all about football and showcased some stars that nobody had any idea about. One of those players was Thompson.

Playing in just a handful of games a year ago, Thompson burst onto the scene in a way that caught the attention of nearly every marquee player who attended the event.

"When Travius first started to catch the ball, you could tell that this kid was something very special," said Charles Fishbein of FloridaKids.us and one of the organizers of the camp. "I remember saying to some people who were watching that this kid was on the verge of becoming a top prospect."

Over the next three months, Thompson would show up at nearly every camp and combine available, and suddenly, his star was rising at a record pace.

By the time spring football began, every coach wanted to get a look at a sure-handed, physical pass catcher with "skinny" legs who many had compared to former University of Miami standout Lamar Thomas.

After his three-catch outing in the spring game against Delray Beach Atlantic, Thompson was on the map. As some of the quality receivers were mentioned across the state, you couldn't rattle them off without putting this quality receiver in that mix.

"Through camps, games, combines and practices, I have had the chance to see every elite receiver in the state," said Fishbein. "Right now, with everything he brings to the table, he is probably the best in the state. Without hesitation, he is a ‘Big-3' kid. I talked to major college coaches who totally agree with me."

STRENGTHS: The first positive about Thompson is he creates a complete mismatch with just about any cornerback you put on him. He is physical off the ball, has a mean streak, which has watched him mix it up with some of the best to play the position.

Because he works against physical teammate Frantz Accime (6-0, 185) in practice every day, his ability to get open and separate from the secondary is a quality that coaches simply love about him.

Watching him play in the spring game, he is always open, and while the quarterback doesn't always have time to throw the ball, he is destined to attract a double team almost every down.

For someone who lacks experience, Thompson adjusts so well for the ball, and even though he appears to be thin and not strong at all, defensive backs who have gone against him continue to tell me that he is one of the toughest to cover over the middle because he is fearless, can jump and will do things in traffic that other receivers just won't do!"

WHAT HE NEEDS TO WORK ON: The lack of experience sometimes shows on his overall pass routes. He needs to sharpen his "out patterns" as well as his fakes, which I believe will come with time.

The MVP of the D-1 Camp at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Fl., Thompson understands that he has a long way to go – as an athlete and in the classroom where he has committed himself to working harder.

OVERALL: Since has no real film to speak of, the true measure of his overall ability comes in the form of what he does live and at the camps he has attended.

When all is said and done, you just may not find a better overall receiver in the state, and as he gets ready for the season, he will be the center of attention for all to watch.

COLLEGES ON THE HORIZON: A number of colleges have stayed away because of grades, but as he continues to do well at these camps and combines, schools will simply not have a choice. They will have to make a decision and start making offers, or at least set up his future.
