It may have been a dream and a fantasy, but for the past eight days, it captured the imagination of an entire state of high school football fans. On Sunday, the first ever www.floridakids.us Fantasy Football Championship crowned a winner. Congratulations to the Bulldogs of Jacksonville Bolles!

MIAMI - Three days after No. 3 Jacksonville Bolles came from 27 points back to shock No. 2 Lakeland, the Bulldogs did it again. But this time, it won coach Corky Rogers the first ever www.floridakids.us Fantasy Football State Championship.

Trailing 14-0 at the end of the first half, Bolles rallied in the second half and upset No. 1 Seffner Armwood, 28-21 before a record crowd of 78,543 in the Orange Bowl on Sunday afternoon.

Armwood, which had not lost in the field in two years, struck in the first quarter on Kalvin Bailey’s 12-yard run at the 3:23 mark for a 7-0 lead.

The Hawks extended the lead to 14-0 at the half on a 27-yard pass play from Jameel Williams to Demetrius McCray.

Even though they were down at the half, the Bulldogs knew that if they came out and cut down on the mistakes, they would be right back in the game. After all, against Lakeland on Thursday, they found themselves down 27-0 at the half before getting some breaks in the second half and upended the Dreadnaughts, 30-27.

With 8:25 left in the third quarter, Greg Chapas recovered a Williams fumble at the Armwood 22. Three plays later, Max Higgs, who ran for 154 yards took it to cut the lead to 14-7.

Once again, Armwood made a mistake that cost them. When Williams hit Matt Brevi with a pass, he appeared to be on his way for a score, but the talented junior lost the handle on the ball at 6 and it rolled through the end zone for a touchback.

On the very first play after the turnover, Higgs bolted 80 yards for a score off left tackle and the game was tied on the last play of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter belonged to Bolles as they would take the lead with 6:21 left on a 34-yard pass from Riley Skinner to Rocky Ross. They extended that lead to 28-14 when Williams was picked off by Donald Manns who returned the ball 43 yards for the score.

The Hawks did manage to cut the lead back to 28-21 on a 30-yard pass from Williams to Kareem Royal, but time ran out and the Bolles Bulldogs had upset the two-time defending state champion.

“I thought this tournament was a lot of fun,” said Larry Blustein. “To have 64 teams put into one computer and have such a realistic outcome is something that I never thought would happen.”

There was a lot of work put in to this,” Blustein added. “Maybe next year, I will find something better to do with my time between Christmas and the new year.”
